New Blues striker Christian Benitez can’t wait to pull on a Birmingham City shirt and get playing after officially becoming the club’s record signing.

Christian-BenitezAs soon as the ink was dry on his contract this afternoon (Tuesday) 23-year-old Benitez exclusively told bcfc.com: “I am really happy to have signed for Birmingham City and am looking forward to playing for the Blues.

“I think it is the right time for Christian Benitez to take on the challenge of the Premier League and I will be giving everything to score as many goals as possible and share in good times with this club.”

An agreement was reached with Mexican club Santos Laguna in early June and personal terms completed with the player, who is the son of one of Ecuador’s all-time leading goalscorers, Ermen Benitez.

Benitez, who has submitted his application for UK entry clearance to the British Embassy and for whom all the required immigration documentation has been completed, attracted attention across the globe with his performances in the 2006 World Cup in Germany and has impressed in Mexico’s Primera Division over the last two campaigns, scoring 31 goals in 58 games after joining from El Nacional in his home town of Quito.

The skilful striker has played in 86 per cent of Ecuador’s competitive A grade games over the last two years – well above the required amount to obtain a work permit.
